== Why is BOSC parterning with GCC in 2018? ==
 +
BOSC has been a part of ISMB since its inception, and we greatly value our
 +
relationships with the ISCB management and the ISMB community.
 +
[http://www.open-bio.org/wiki/BOSC_2017 BOSC 2017], which was part of

[https://www.iscb.org/ismbeccb2017 ISMB/ECCB 2017] in Prague, was an

exciting and successful meeting.

== Acceptance Criteria ==
+
Because of our continuing focus on
 +
[https://github.com/OBF/obf-docs/blob/master/Travel_fellowships.md broadening and deepening the BOSC community],
 +
we've been exploring ways to reach those in the bioinformatics community who aren’t already part of the audience attracted
 +
by ISMB. As part of that exploration, we have looked at other organizations and conferences that
 +
have been successful at establishing a strong and growing community of
 +
participants. One such conference is the [https://gcc2017.sciencesconf.org/ Galaxy Community Conference (GCC)].

'''BOSC''' welcomes submissions about all aspects of open source bioinformatics, open science and open data, including but not limited to reproducible research, citizen/participatory science, standards and interoperability, open source tools for data science and visualization, and medical and translational bioinformatics. '''Work discussed in BOSC presentations must be open source''', with a recognized open source license and an URL for accessing your code. We look for impact of the work in building or sustaining open source communities.  We are happy to consider abstracts describing work that has already been published or presented elsewhere, but we ask you to mention that on the submission form. Work that has been presented at a recent BOSC will need to demonstrate significant progress in order to be eligible for a talk at BOSC 2018.
+
After much discussion and planning, we'll be participating in a
 +
[https://gccbosc2018.sched.com/ bioinformatics community conference] in 2018
 +
that includes both GCC and BOSC. We hope this will help serve the open
 +
bioinformatics community in a few ways:

'''GCC''' welcomes submissions that use, implement, or extend the Galaxy platform and ecosystem, including but not limited to integrating and analyzing large and diverse datasets in biomedical research; enhancing reproducibility in computational analyses; and fostering collaboration and communication in scientific workflow development.
+
* It creates a conference with an explicit focus on development, support and maintenance of the interoperable software tools and libraries that enable modern scientific research. We believe the only sustainable way to provide the infrastructure needed for high throughput analyses is to build cooperating, open, diverse communities of programmers and biologists. This conference is where we hope to build and deepen this community.

If your abstract PRIMARILY concerns Galaxy, please submit your abstract to the Galaxy track. If it is accepted for a talk, we will try to schedule your talk during a joint GCC/BOSC session.
+
* It includes two dedicated training days by members from both the [https://www.open-bio.org/wiki/Main_Page Open Bioinformatics Foundation] and Galaxy communities. This enables focused training on useful tools and approaches, making the conference attractive to anyone who wants to expand their skills.

Not sure which one to submit your abstract to? Just pick one and the chairs will work it out!
+
* There will be two integrated days of collaboration following the conference, merging [https://www.open-bio.org/wiki/Codefest_2017 BOSC Codefest] and [https://gcc2017.sciencesconf.org/resource/page/id/10 Galaxy's Developer and User Hackathon Days]. We hope the integrated collaboration days following training and the conference talks will allow new and existing members of the community to attend and build working relationships.

== Abstract Formatting Requirements ==
+
* The meeting will be held at a great venue in Portland--Reed College--providing an affordable and fun experience for anyone who wants to attend.
Abstracts must be '''one page''' (8.5 inches by 11 inches or A4) in length and submitted '''as a PDF file'''. Your one-page abstract is welcome to include any figures or graphics that will fit; however, we cannot accept figures on additional page(s).

Please format your abstract as follows. Abstract PDFs will be included as-is in the program, so they need to include all the relevant information on that one page.

The [[OBF|Open Bioinformatics Foundation]], which coordinates BOSC, is dedicated to promoting the practice and philosophy of Open Source Software Development within the biological research community. For this reason, if a submitted abstract concerns a specific software system for use by the research community, then that software must be licensed with a recognized Open Source License, and be available for download, including source code, by a tar/zip file accessed through ftp/http or through a widely used version control system like cvs/subversion/git/bazaar/Mercurial.

Why is BOSC parterning with GCC in 2018?

BOSC has been a part of ISMB since its inception, and we greatly value our relationships with the ISCB management and the ISMB community. BOSC 2017, which was part of ISMB/ECCB 2017 in Prague, was an exciting and successful meeting.

Because of our continuing focus on broadening and deepening the BOSC community, we've been exploring ways to reach those in the bioinformatics community who aren’t already part of the audience attracted by ISMB. As part of that exploration, we have looked at other organizations and conferences that have been successful at establishing a strong and growing community of participants. One such conference is the Galaxy Community Conference (GCC).

After much discussion and planning, we'll be participating in a bioinformatics community conference in 2018 that includes both GCC and BOSC. We hope this will help serve the open bioinformatics community in a few ways:

  • It creates a conference with an explicit focus on development, support and maintenance of the interoperable software tools and libraries that enable modern scientific research. We believe the only sustainable way to provide the infrastructure needed for high throughput analyses is to build cooperating, open, diverse communities of programmers and biologists. This conference is where we hope to build and deepen this community.
  • It includes two dedicated training days by members from both the Open Bioinformatics Foundation and Galaxy communities. This enables focused training on useful tools and approaches, making the conference attractive to anyone who wants to expand their skills.
  • There will be two integrated days of collaboration following the conference, merging BOSC Codefest and Galaxy's Developer and User Hackathon Days. We hope the integrated collaboration days following training and the conference talks will allow new and existing members of the community to attend and build working relationships.
  • The meeting will be held at a great venue in Portland--Reed College--providing an affordable and fun experience for anyone who wants to attend.

We would like to emphasize that this is an experiment for us and we aren’t looking to sever our strong ties with ISMB. We're planning to evaluate the combined GCC and BOSC experience in 2018 and welcome community feedback on all of these thoughts and plans.
