Getting involved
BOSC is the result of many people's efforts and energy, from attendees all the way up to the chairs. There are many ways to get involved with the conference:

Attend
There's no conference without attendees! Your presence in the community is crucial to the success of the event, and we're always happy to see new faces. We encourage everyone to attend the main meeting and/or Codefest, meet people, and tweet about their experience.

Present your work
Our focus is on open source work and communities. We require your code to be open and properly licensed, or else your abstract will be passed over. If your work is more about training materials than code, we'd like your materials to be open and licensed so others can benefit from it!

In the early days of BOSC, an abstract that was basically "I wrote some bioinformatics code, and it's open source" was good enough to merit at least a short talk, but we've grown since then. Even if a project is new and therefore doesn't yet have a community, there should be some sort of plan for building a community of users and/or developers.

Even with the hard requirement of openness, we do try to provide a platform to everyone who wants to present. We have long talks, short (or "lightning") talks, posters, and demos, and we really do want to hear from everyone.

Organise a BoF
"Birds of a Feather" groups are self-organised meetings during BOSC where anyone who wants to have a conversation with the community can gather and share. Usually BoFs are submitted through the conference website, and the list of topics will be available to all attendees. These tend to happen over lunch or dinner, or in the evenings, and can be a great way to meet people in smaller more accessible groups. Past BoFs have included project introductions, sponsor demos, discussions on diversity and inclusion, and even one for people on twitter!

Review abstracts
Conference abstracts are reviewed by volunteers who express their interest. We encourage reviewers to be constructive in their comments, and many sign their reviews. Most reviewers will be assigned 3-4 abstracts per call, and there are two calls per conference (the main one, and a "late breaking lightning talk" round). We acknowledge our reviewers on the conference website and in the program. If you'd like to be a reviewer, contact the organising committee at bosc@open-bio.org.

Join the organizing committee
The organising committee does the heavy lifting for making sure BOSC happens every year. Committee members help wrangle reviewers, assist in drafting and sending communication to reviewers, participants, and attendees, design programs and posters, find dinner locations, chair sessions during the conference, and more! The workload gets heavy in two waves: first when abstracts are coming in and being reviewed, and then again as the conference gets closer and the practical details become important. You'll also be expected to answer questions during the conference, both in person and online as questions come in to the mailing list, and there's usually a postmortem after the conference where we talk about what went well and what we'll improve for the next year.

We acknowledge committee members on the conference website and in the program, and they are entitled to complimentary conference registration if their institution/employer doesn't already support them. In addition to this, chairs and co-chairs can have their travel and expenses supported by OBF if they aren't covered by their institution/employer. Travel support for other committee members may be available, but is up to the discretion of the co-chairs and OBF board and may be subject to available funds.

If you'd like to join the BOSC organising committee, contact us at bosc@open-bio.org.

Sponsors
The Open Bioinformatics Foundation welcomes donations to help support our work and the BOSC meeting, including offering Travel Fellowships and registration fee waivers.

* In 2018 we held BOSC co-located with the Galaxy Community Conference, see the combined GCCBOSC 2018 sponsors and GCCBOSC 2018 sponsorship tier details pages.

* In 2017 we requested USD $1000 for sponsoring BOSC, and would include your name and logo on the conference webpage, selected publicity material including blog posts and tweets, and during the conference itself during the opening and/or closing slides. Sponsors are welcome to submit work to be presented at BOSC as a talk or poster, but this will be reviewed impartially like any other submission.

* Likewise in 2017, we requested USD $1500 for sponsoring BOSC and the Codefest, or USD $500 for sponsoring only the pre-BOSC Codefest, with similar publicity arrangements. Here some of the donation directly funded lunch and refreshment for the Codefest participants. Sponsor's developer/technical staff are welcome to attend the Codefest.

We are open to discussing specific requests, such as distributing stickers or leaflets, or earmarking the sponsorship to a specific activity.

In 2019, BOSC will be part of ISMB/ECCB in Basel. We therefore need to follow ISMB's dates and procedures.

Submit your abstract now (via EasyChair).

Important Dates
* February 2019: Abstract submission opens
* April 11, 2019: Talk/poster abstract submission deadline (for longer talks, lightning talks, posters)
* May 9, 2019: Talk/poster authors notified
* May 15, 2019: Late poster/late-breaking lightning talk submission deadline
* May 23, 2019: Late round authors notified
* July 24-25, 2019: BOSC 2019, Basel, Switzerland (as part of ISMB/ECCB 2019)

Abstract Length and Formatting Requirements
200-word summary: ISMB requires authors to submit a 200 word (or less) summary of their work; this will be used for their website and app. Confusingly, this is referred to on EasyChair as the "abstract".

PDF: Authors who hope to present a talk must *also* submit a 1-2 page PDF describing their work in more detail. The PDF is welcome to include any figures or graphics that will fit in the two pages. We cannot accept submissions in Word, LaTeX, or other formats.

If you are only applying to present a poster, you only need to submit a 200-word summary ("abstract"); submitting an additional PDF is optional.

Note that only first-round abstracts (submitted by April 11) are eligible for longer talks. Late-round submissions will be considered for posters and a few will be chosen for Late-Breaking Lightning Talks.

Length: In the past, BOSC abstracts were limited to one page. Please do not feel compelled to use the second page unless you want to. We do hope you'll use the extra space to include examples of biological applications of your work, and a summary of the current and/or projected community aspect of your project.

How to Submit
Submissions are via EasyChair. If you don't already have an EasyChair account, you will need to create one.

Once you sign in, you will get to a screen that says "Please select the track relevant for your submission." Select BOSC (4th line down). Note that later in the submission process, you will be able to list one or two other COSIs/tracks that your abstract might also fit into.

The submission form refers to the 200-word summary of your work as an "abstract", but if you are applying to give a talk, you must also upload a longer abstract (1-2 pages) as a PDF.

Acceptance Criteria
BOSC welcomes submissions about all aspects of open source bioinformatics, open science and open data, including but not limited to reproducible research, citizen/participatory science, standards and interoperability, open source tools for data science and visualization, and medical and translational bioinformatics. Work discussed in BOSC presentations must be open source, with a recognized open source license and a URL for accessing your code. We look for impact of the work in building or sustaining open source communities. We are happy to consider abstracts describing work that has already been published or presented elsewhere, but we ask you to mention that on the submission form. Work that has been presented at a recent BOSC will need to demonstrate significant progress in order to be eligible for a talk at BOSC 2019.

BOSC Open Source License Requirement
The Open Bioinformatics Foundation, which coordinates BOSC, is dedicated to promoting the practice and philosophy of Open Source Software Development within the biological research community. For this reason, if a submitted abstract concerns a specific software system for use by the research community, then that software must be licensed with a recognized Open Source License, and be available for download, including source code, by a tar/zip file accessed through ftp/http or through a widely used version control system like cvs/subversion/git/bazaar/Mercurial.

See the following websites for further information:
* Recognized Open Source Licenses
* Definition of the Open Source Philosophy

Open Bioinformatics Foundation Travel Fellowships
The OBF Travel Fellowship program is aimed at increasing diverse participation at events promoting open source bioinformatics software development and open science in the biological research community. The fellowship can be used to cover airfare, hotel and / or conference registration fees up to a value of USD 1,000. BOSC speakers are welcome to apply for a fellowship. We review applications three times a year. The next deadline for applying is April 15, 2019.

Code of Conduct
As part of ISMB, BOSC 2019 will be covered by ISMB's Code of Conduct.. We are also working on an OBF Code of Conduct.

Open Bioinformatics Foundation CoFest 2019 will be July 26th and 27th, 2019 (the Friday and Saturday after BOSC 2019 and the ISMB/ECCB 2019 meeting) at a location in Basel, Switzerland TBD.

CoFest is an opportunity for anyone interested in open science, biology and programming to meet, discuss and work collaboratively. Everyone is welcome to attend. We will have a mix of experienced developers, users, trainers, and researchers, newcomers to bioinformatics, and everything in between.

This will be the 10th annual pre- or post-BOSC collaboration fest. Previous fun and successful events were Codefest 2010 in Boston, Codefest 2011 in Vienna, Codefest 2012 in Los Angeles, Codefest 2013 in Berlin, Codefest 2014 in Boston, Codefest 2015 in Dublin, Codefest 2016 in Orlando, Codefest 2017 in Prague, and GCCBOSC Collaboration Fest 2018 in Portland.

Objectives
Anyone interested in contributing to open source bioinformatics projects is encouraged to attend. Newcomers are especially encouraged to attend. The goal of many collaborative work events is to produce code, period.

CoFest's goals are much wider:

* Grow and foster the contributor community for open source bioinformatics projects.
* Extend, enhance, and otherwise improve open source bioinformatics code.
* Create, extend, and otherwise improve non-code objects, such as documentation and training materials

Why attend
* For new members of the community: meet and learn with other open source programmers. There are projects specifically for new attendees, or add your own ideas.

* For current community members: expand your network and strengthen existing relationships. Teach and learn from new community members. Focus on open source work without interruptions. Discuss questions and problems in real time.

* For everyone: discuss and learn from the community. Teach others what you know. Build new friendships and collaborations.

If you have any questions or thoughts, please get in touch with Michael directly, in the Gitter chat room or on the CoFest 2019 mailing list.

What to expect
The Open Bioinformatics Foundation CoFest is a collaborative two day working session. The only
requirement for attendance is that you have an interest in open source software
and solving scientific problems. We will have contributors to open source
bioinformatics tools present to collaboratively work with, and we welcome new
attendees who want to learn and contribute to open source code or documentation.

The rough structure of the two days is:

* Start with introductions from everyone attending about their goals and plans for the two days.

* Assemble into working groups based on shared interests like programming languages, open source projects or biological questions. We use the collaboratively brainstormed Google document as the basis for setting up groups. Attendees determine the goals for the two days. If you have an idea for a project, please add it before the event. Any and all suggestions are welcome.

* Work and discuss. Enjoy the productive time.

* We'll have regular breaks where each group can deliver short reports on their progress.

* We have informal lunches, dinners and drinks as a way for everyone to get to know each other better.

* At the end of the two days, we summarize contributions and work accomplished in a meeting report.

Please feel free to get in touch with any of the organizers with questions. You
are very welcome at CoFest.

Attending
You are very welcome to attend. There is no cost, we only ask you to register to help organize numbers. Please add yourself if you are
interested to this Google spreadsheet
We'll coordinate through the CoFest 2019 mailing list,
so please sign up to discuss and receive updates.

If you're not able to physically attend, we're still more than happy to have you participate in Codefest. Please sign up on the the Google spreadsheet and list yourself as remote only. We have a Gitter chat room we can use to coordinate and discuss in real time and will have an open Google Hangout to make it easier to be part of CoFest remotely.

Add your project ideas to the shared google document. The ideas include smaller focused projects and larger work. We want suggestions from everyone and will organize into groups around these during CoFest.

Why is BOSC partnering with GCC in 2018?
BOSC has been a part of ISMB since its inception, and we greatly value our
relationships with the ISCB management and the ISMB community.
BOSC 2017, which was part of
ISMB/ECCB 2017 in Prague, was an
exciting and successful meeting.

Because of our continuing focus on
broadening and deepening the BOSC community,
we've been exploring ways to reach those in the bioinformatics community who aren’t already part of the audience attracted
by ISMB. As part of that exploration, we have looked at other organizations and conferences that
have been successful at establishing a strong and growing community of
participants. One such conference is the Galaxy Community Conference (GCC).

After much discussion and planning, we'll be participating in a
bioinformatics community conference in 2018
that includes both GCC and BOSC. We hope this will help serve the open
bioinformatics community in a few ways:

* It creates a conference with an explicit focus on development, support and maintenance of the interoperable software tools and libraries that enable modern scientific research. We believe the only sustainable way to provide the infrastructure needed for high throughput analyses is to build cooperating, open, diverse communities of programmers and biologists. This conference is where we hope to build and deepen this community.

* It includes two dedicated training days by members from both the Open Bioinformatics Foundation and Galaxy communities. This enables focused training on useful tools and approaches, making the conference attractive to anyone who wants to expand their skills.

* There will be integrated collaboration days after the conference, merging BOSC Codefest and Galaxy's Developer and User Hackathon Days. We hope the integrated collaboration days following training and the conference talks will allow new and existing members of the community to attend and build working relationships.

* The meeting will be held at a great venue in Portland--Reed College--providing an affordable and fun experience for anyone who wants to attend.

We would like to emphasize that this is an experiment for us and we aren’t looking
to sever our strong ties with ISMB. We're planning to evaluate the combined GCC
and BOSC experience in 2018 and welcome community feedback on all of these
thoughts and plans.

Submit your abstract now (via EasyChair).

Important Dates
* April 11, 2019: Talk/poster abstract submission deadline
* May 9, 2019: Talk/poster authors notified
* July 24-25, 2019: BOSC 2019, Basel, Switzerland (as part of ISMB/ECCB 2019)

In 2019, BOSC will be part of ISMB/ECCB in Basel. We therefore need to follow ISMB's dates and procedures.

Submit your abstract now (via EasyChair). When you go to the submission portal (EasyChair), you will be able to choose which COSI to submit to.

Important Dates
* February 2019: Abstract submission opens
* April 11, 2019: Talk/poster abstract submission deadline
* May 9, 2019: Talk/poster authors notified
* May 6, 2019: (proposed by ISMB) Late poster submission deadline
* May 23, 2019: Late poster authors notified
* July 24-25, 2019: BOSC 2019, Basel, Switzerland (as part of ISMB/ECCB 2019)

Length: In the past, BOSC abstracts were limited to one page. Please do not feel compelled to use the second page unless you want to. We do hope you'll use the extra space to include examples of biological applications of your work, and a summary of the current and/or projected community aspect of your project.

How to Submit
Submissions are via [EasyChair https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=ismbeccb2019abstract].

Abstract Length and Formatting Requirements
ISMB requires authors to submit a 200 word (or less) summary of their work; this will be used for their website and app.

Authors who hope to present a talk must *also* submit a 1-2 page PDF describing their work in more detail. The PDF is welcome to include any figures or graphics that will fit; however, we cannot accept figures on additional page(s). We cannot accept submissions in Word, LaTeX, or other formats.

If you are only applying to present a poster, you only need to submit a 200-word summary; submitting an additional PDF is optional.

In the past, BOSC abstracts were limited to one page. Please do not feel compelled to use the second page unless you want to. We do hope you'll use the extra space to include examples of biological applications of your work, and a summary of the current and/or projected community aspect of your project.
For 2018, the Bioinformatics Open Source Conference (BOSC 2018) and the Galaxy Community Conference (GCC2018) are joining together for a unified event (GCC BOSC 2018) to be held in Portland, Oregon, United States, June 25-30, 2018.

Submit your abstract now (via EasyChair). When you go to the submission portal (EasyChair), you will be able to choose whether to submit your abstract to GCC or to BOSC (Late-Breaking Lightning Talk round).

Important Dates
* May 17, 2018: Late-breaking lightning talk/poster/demo submission deadline
* June 1, 2018: Final deadline for submitting demo/poster abstracts
* June 1, 2018: GCCBOSC advance registration ends
* June 25-30, 2018: GCCBOSC2018 (Portland, Oregon) -- main conference June 27-28

Work that has been presented at a recent BOSC will need to demonstrate significant progress in order to be eligible for a talk at BOSC 2018.

GCC welcomes submissions that use, implement, or extend the Galaxy platform and ecosystem, including but not limited to integrating and analyzing large and diverse datasets in biomedical research; enhancing reproducibility in computational analyses; and fostering collaboration and communication in scientific workflow development.

If your abstract PRIMARILY concerns Galaxy, please submit your abstract to the Galaxy track. If it is accepted for a talk, we will try to schedule your talk during a joint GCC/BOSC session.

Not sure which one to submit your abstract to? Just pick one and the chairs will work it out!

Abstract Formatting Requirements
Abstracts must be one page (8.5 inches by 11 inches or A4) in length and submitted as a PDF file. Your one-page abstract is welcome to include any figures or graphics that will fit; however, we cannot accept figures on additional page(s).

Please format your abstract as follows. Abstract PDFs will be included as-is in the program, so they need to include all the relevant information on that one page.
* Include the following pieces of information in order from the top of the page:
** Title
** Authors, with the presenting author's name underlined.
** Author affiliations, including the e-mail address of the presenting author.
** URL for the overall project web site
** URL for accessing the code
** The particular Open Source License being used (for BOSC)
* Use 1 inch (2.5 cm) margins on the top, sides, and bottom of the page, and a font size of 11 or 12.

You may wish to use one of these abstract templates:
* PDF (not fillable)
* Markdown to PDF (convert with pandoc and LaTeX)
* Word (.doc)
* Word (.docx)
* Pages
* LaTeX

* Recognized Open Source Licenses

The deadline for applying is April 15, 2018.
